Before the ice goes in
The same questions arrive in the same order: first when choosing, then at the kitchen counter, then somewhere on the third hour of a hot day, then a week later.
Choosing
Before anything is boughtSoft cooler or cooler backpack?
It comes down to the walk. Boot to table, the fold-flat cooler loads easier and holds more. Car park to beach, campsite or stand, the backpack wins — 23 L on your back is a different day from 23 L on one shoulder.
Is the can count honest?
It is the bag packed with drinks and nothing else. Working figure: a quarter to a third of the space goes to ice on a hot day, so a 33-can pack carries around 24 cans plus enough ice to matter.
Which colours mark the least?
Same shell everywhere, so it is only about what shows. Black and storm grey hide scuffs, orange and blue are easy to find in a dark boot, cream and white look sharpest and want wiping more often.
Packing
At the kitchen counterLoose ice, or ice packs?
Cubes are fine in the coolers and cooler backpacks — the liner is sealed, so the melt stays in the bag. In the lunch bags use packs: cube edges can score a small liner over a season.
Does pre-chilling really matter?
It is the cheapest hour you will ever spend. An ice pack in the empty bag for an hour brings the liner and foam down, so the ice you pack for the trip is not spent cooling the bag.
What goes in the top deck?
Bread, fruit, containers, anything people will grab all day. It stays cool without sitting in melt water, and opening it does not vent the cold bay underneath.
On the day
Three hours in, in the sunThe ice has turned to water. Is that bad?
No — ice water at zero degrees chills better than air. The liner is heat-pressed so you can leave it in there until you get home. Drain it then, not at the beach.
It is sitting in full sun. How much does that cost?
Enough to notice. A dark shell in direct sun runs hot; move the bag into shade, under a towel or behind a chair and you buy back hours for free.
Can I stand on it, sit on it, use it as a table?
Set things on it, yes — the coolers hold their shape loaded. Sitting on a loaded soft cooler stresses the base seam and the zip, and that is where they fail.
Afterwards
Once everyone has gone homeHow do I clean it?
Warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid, a cloth. No machine, no dishwasher — both separate the foam from the liner. Dry it fully open before folding.
It smells. What now?
It was folded away damp. Wipe the liner with water and white vinegar, rinse with a damp cloth, leave it open somewhere airy for a day.
