Six people, four bag families, one stubborn test. Everything below is what we can put our name to — no origin myth, no founder photograph on a beach.

The test that decides a build
We load a sample at seven in the morning with drinks that are already cold, the ice we would actually use and the food that would actually go in. Then it sits through a normal day — sun on the shell, lid opened whenever anyone wants a drink. At nine in the evening somebody reaches into the bottom. If that can is cold, the build passes. If it is not, the sample goes back to the liner, the foam or the zip, and the colour we were about to order gets cancelled.

Things we will say out loud
- Cold retention is a shared job. The bag does its half; pre-chilling, packing tight and keeping the lid shut does the other half. A half-empty cooler opened every ten minutes will not see sixteen hours and neither would anyone else's.
- Water-resistant is not waterproof. Our travel and trail shells shrug off drizzle and splash. Sustained rain needs a cover, and we would rather write that here than have you find out on a ridge.
- Wear is not a defect. Concrete abrades, loose ice scores a lunch-bag liner, tailgates cut straps. When that is what happened, we will tell you plainly instead of processing a claim we both know is not one.
